Interesting History of the Word Kashmir
According to one tradition, the word Kashmir is a combination of "Kash" and "Mir". It is said that if Hazrat Sulaiman (peace be upon him) was the chief of the giants in the royal court. While Mir was the leader of the fairies.
When the fleet of Hazrat Suleiman (A.S.) passed through the
region of Kashmir flying in the wind, Suleiman (A.S.) ordered the fleet to land
on the dry top of a mountain in a vast reservoir of water.
So when the raft landed, he saw that the water was stagnant
around as far as the eye could see. On seeing this beautiful scene, he got up
in a daze. A beautiful fertile valley would appear, in which human population
would be possible, so the question arose, how to release the water from this
lake?
Kash, the chief of the jinns, who was present at the time,
offered that he might perform this duty. But he requested that if he performed
this service, the Mir Pari in the royal court should be given in marriage to
him. Sulaiman (peace be upon him) promised to fulfill this request, and ordered
him to empty the lake, so the jinn cut the mountain of Bara through his
talismanic act, from which the water of the lake was discharged.
Hazrat Sulaiman (peace be upon him) fulfilled his promise
and gave Mir Pari as his wife, thus the name of this region was named Kashmir
from Kash and Mir, which became Kashmir due to phonetic change.
The throne of Sulaiman on the top of Mount Harmukh behind
Srinagar is attributed to this event. When Syed Ali Hamdani visited Kashmir in
the fourteenth century AD, he probably gave the name Bagh Sulaiman to Kashmir
in this context. It can be well estimated from the traditions that the
greatness and vastness of the region of Kashmir in terms of historical
civilization and culture is wrapped up in its foothills.
