Discovering The Lost City of Mohenjo Daro
Introduction:
Mohenjo-Daro
means “Mound of the dead” in the Sindhi Language (the original name of the city
is still unknown). It is an archaeological site of the province Sindh. It is an
old historical city and was established in 2500BCE and it was the proof if
ancient Indus Valley Civilization.
Location:
Mohenjo Daro Map, It is situated in the province
Sindh and present at the distance of twenty-five kilometers from Larkana near
the River Indus.
Discovery:
Some people had an opinion that this city is destroyed and populated many times. Probably, the reason of the destruction of the city is heavy floods of Indus River. But the exact reason of its destruction is still unknown and uncertain. After some time about in 1920 this city was discovered , some villagers found some utensils from the area, these were pots and bricks. It was exciting for them to discover something which indicates the old civilization of Mohenjo-Dar. So, they bring these pots and bricks to Sir John Marshall, an English civil servant, whose work was to find the historical remains and to discover the old customs. He was personally interested to find something valuable from that area. By seeing the pieces of pots and bricks, he assumed that there must be a city populated. So he put his efforts to dig the city. And finally, his efforts proved fruitful and he found that there was a city well-established with streets and houses.
Architecture:
There
had been found jewelry, utensils, houses, servant
quarters, bathrooms. Each house was
made with bricks and
mud which shows
that the city
was the symbol
of success of
these people at that
time. The city was
progressive and we
could see that it was
populated on a
special plan.There were
founds covered grains
and streets with
baked bricks. There was
a big hall
where people store
grains. The farmers at
that time grew eatables
for them. There was a
system of sewage
and drainage and it was a
complex system. There were carts
and other means of
transport. There was also a
market in the center
for shopping. In short, the city had all
those things which resembles it
with a progressive and
modern city of present. The people use
metals and made things
from them which shows that the
use of metals was also known
at that time. The most exciting
thing found was a
head of
the bull which was used
as seal. Long and loose dresses
were found. And a statue
of dancing girl made
from metal was found. The toys,
weapons and pottery found from this city was incredible. The city was cleaned
and planned. This city also had a system
of weights and measures which is a
symbol of thriving economy.
Civilization:
The exact
relegious beliefs of the people
are still unknown and it is
said that it will
remain a mystery throughout. They
had their own
customs and beleifs. The girls wore
jewelry
in the same style as
the women of the present age wear. There
was also
found the Writing Pattern of the
people of this city. Researches have been
done on this pattern but
no one could understand this writing style. There
writing pattern was unique and
it is beleived that if someone in the
future
could understand their
language, there would be
exciting information about
the culture and customs of Mohenjo-Daro. There were also some Craftsmen in that
custom which were really
genius. There were two main Statues that were found from Mohenjo-Daro, One of the statue is in Dehli (India)
and ther other is found
in Pakistan. People used utensils made from
mud, and children played
with the toys which were more
likely as the toys used by children of
the present times. The modern infrastructure and everything discovered
about the city
was really mind-blowing which shows that the
people were really creative, intelligent and progress
The Great Bath of Mohenjo Daro:
One of the
iconic structure of Mohenjo-Daro is there Great Bath. This was a large
rectangular pool measuring about 12 meters long, 7 meters wide and 2.4m deep.
It served as a bathing pool and also as a source of refreshment as it was a
public gathering place. So this pool was the proof of the intelligent minds of
their engineers.
